This is largest verdict ever awarded in the city of Hampton, said Circuit Court Clerk James Bohnaker.
This week, a Hampton jury awarded the $7.5 million to 30-year-old Ann-Marie Wesen-Jaques after an unusually long 10-day trial in which she accused a truck driver of causing the accident where she was injured.
Wesen-Jaques was injured Dec. 29, 1996, when a tractor-trailer swerved into her lane going eastbound on Interstate 64. During the accident, her car was slammed up against the guardrail several times.
Stephen Smith, Wesen-Jaques’ attorney who specializes in brain injury cases, said his client had an injury that has left her incapable of working. She suffers from nightmares, hair loss, chronic pain and limited short-term memory.
The $7.5 million that the jury granted Wesen-Jaques represents her lost wages and medical bills for both the past and future.
The jury issued the verdict against both the truck driver, Howard Rose, and Stow Mills Inc., the company Rose worked for. Stow Mills is a natural food distributor, which since the 1996 accident was bought by United Natural Foods.
