Explosion at Georgia Pacific Paper Mill
On May 13, 2019, a devastating incident took place at the Georgia Pacific Paper Mill in Muskogee, Oklahoma.
A malfunctioning clamp truck sparked a fire that quickly escalated into a Boiling Liquid Expanding Vapor Explosion (BLEVE), resulting in significant damage to the mill and severe injuries to multiple employees, including Ms. Capps.
Our Client’s Challenges After the Accident
Among those affected was Ms. Gail Capps, a dedicated employee whose life was left in shambles after the explosion. Knocked unconscious, she suffered a traumatic brain injury (TBI) and serious orthopedic damage, leading to ongoing medical challenges and the end of her career.
In the aftermath, Ms. Capps was not only forced to struggle with her physical recovery but also with legal hurdles as companies tried to blame her pre-existing conditions on her injuries.
A Glimpse Into the Trial Experience
Attorney David Holt led the intense trial that reshaped Ms. Capps’ future. Spanning 54 days in Oklahoma, with 33 trial days and testimony from 59 witnesses, the case faced many difficulties, including weather disruptions and power outages.
Despite these obstacles, the trial ended with a significant victory—a $10 million verdict, possibly the largest TBI award in Oklahoma’s history.
Ms. Capps faced life-changing adversity with courage. If you or a loved one have experienced a traumatic brain injury due to an accident, don’t face it alone.
