When 10-year-old Halee Miller decided to make a cup of coffee with her grandmother, the last thing she expected was to end up in the hospital. According to a recent consumer report on ABC News, Halee’s mother, Susan Miller, had purchased a Tassimo Single Cup Brewer as a Christmas present for the family. Halee was making a cup of coffee when she heard a grinding noise that was followed by an explosion.

Halee was burned by hot coffee grounds that landed on her face and neck. Her mother rushed home from work and claims she could hear her daughter screaming in pain when she pulled in the driveway. Halee was taken to the hospital where she was treated in the burn unit and underwent surgery and synthetic skin grafting.

Susan Miller told ABC News, “To see a child go through something like this over a defective appliance is really a sad situation. I’m very happy to see they’re recalling it before anyone else gets hurt.”

Tassimo Issues Recall

According to Reuters, more than 1.7 million single cup coffee brewers made by Tassimo were recalled in early February.

Additionally, 4 million espresso pads are being recalled. The recall comes after reports of more than 140 consumers suffering burns when hot liquid sprayed from the coffee makers. An astounding 37 of whom received second-degree burns. The reported injuries include a two-year-old girl from Canada who suffered second-degree burns on her face.

The coffee makers included in the recall are both Bosch and Tassimo brands. The coffee makers in question were sold online and in stores between June 2008 and February 2012. More information regarding specific models is available on the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) website.

The coffee makers require special prepackaged coffee beans or tea leaves known as “T Disks.” In addition to the dangerous coffee makers, various brands and flavors of the T Disks have also been recalled including Gevalia, Maxwell House and Nabob. The T-Disks were sold between August 2011 and February 2012. A listing of specific flavors is also available on the CPSC website.

Consumers have been advised to stop using the faulty Bosch and Tassimo brand coffee brewers immediately. Refer to the Tassimo Safety Recall website for instructions on how to determine if your appliance is part of the recall. Tassimo is sending affected consumers free replacement T Disk holders that have been designed to “help prevent the discharge of hot liquid, coffee grounds or tea leaves from the machine.” The website also includes an instructional video on how to install your new T Disk holder.
